Planning a Trip to the Mountains: How to Prepare Your Mercedes-Benz for a Winter Road Trip

January 12, 2016

Mercedes-Benz E 220

If you’re going to the mountains this winter, you’ll want to ensure that your Mercedes-Benz can handle the trip. You might prepare your vehicle in a variety of ways for this kind of excursion. Getting a service check before such a trip is always advisable. You may take your Mercedes-Benz to a reputable repair shop like Collins Automotive in Abbotsford, so you’ll know that your vehicle is ready for the adventure that awaits you.

Ensure Visibility When Possible

The ability to see where you’re going is a top concern when driving in the winter. You may be dealing with hazardous driving conditions on your trip to the mountains, and you won’t want to deal with limited visibility that can be prevented. Be sure to scrape the ice and snow off of your car before you start driving. Don’t forget to remove snow from the roof of your vehicle – this can fall on your windshield when you hit the brakes, and you will instantly lose visibility if it does. Remember to wipe snow off of the headlights and taillights, too.

Another way to maximize your visibility is to get new windshield wipers if they haven’t been replaced in a while. If they are worn, they may fly off when you most need them to function properly. The windshield wiper fluid should also be filled, so you always have enough of it when it’s needed.

Fill the Gas Tank

Make sure that you keep the gas tank at least halfway full in the winter months – especially when you’re going to be out of town. The vehicle will start more easily if the gas tank does not contain condensation in the excess air space. You will not want to deal with a car that won’t start when you’re trying to enjoy yourself on a mountain road trip.

Check the Lights

Before you leave for your trip, have your mechanic take a look at the lights and electrical system in your car. All of the lights should be in good condition; if any of them are not, they should be replaced before you go. You will need headlights, brake lights, and taillights that all work properly, so you don’t get in an accident on a winding mountain road.

Bring the Right Supplies

If you’re going to take a road trip in the winter, remember to pack a few things in your vehicle that could come in handy. Bring a blanket or two in case you do experience some kind of breakdown or system failure. Pack a shovel to help dislodge a tire that is stuck in the snow. Other items to take with you include battery jumper cables, an ice scraper or two, snack foods and water, and a first aid kit.

A road trip in the wintertime could be an exciting journey. However, the excitement you experience should be from seeing gorgeous mountains topped with snow – not from being stranded on the roadside because your car’s engine won’t start. If you want to be certain that your vehicle is in good enough shape for a mountain drive, fill out our free contact form and schedule a maintenance visit soon.
