Volkswagen sales in Canada through September 30, 2014 are up 3 percent overall as compared to the same time a year ago, according to Desrosiers Automotive Reports, a Canadian automotive sector market research company. The manufacturer boasts a popular line of vehicles, including the Jetta, Passat, GTI, Tiguan and Beetle among its utility, mid-sized and hybrid offerings.
Owning any of the above listed models may also come with certain common problems experienced by all Volkswagen owners. Here are several common issues that Volkswagen owners face and some tips on how to address them should they arise for you.
Transmission Problems Common to Volkswagen Models
A type of transmission found in many Volkswagen models is the Tiptronic transmission. The transmission boasts a modern design and the use of cutting edge technology but also has been identified with some problems for VW owners. The problem is noticed when shifting the VW from first to second gear (causing a hard shift) and going from third to fourth gear, which has been reported by some Volkswagen owners as being erratic. These problems with the Tiptronic transmission have been identified by Volkswagen and is being addresses – if you experience any of the shifting problems identified, you should have a service technician assist you with applying the necessary fix.
Problems with a Faulty Mass Air Flow Sensor
VW Jetta and Golf owners have reported problems with mass air flow sensor (MAF). This device is designed to monitor the flow of incoming air, important for regulating fuel mass delivered to your VW’s engine. This common problem can be detected by way of the check engine light constantly on, stalling, misfiring, problems with acceleration or poor fuel economy. If you experience any of these problems, you should immediately have your VW checked to either have the MAF cleaned or replaced.
Problems with Window Glass
A problem that has occurred with some Volkswagen involves the windows and the glass falling into the door. This problem is caused by faulty window clips and/or regulator. When the clips, made of plastic, are exposed to moisture they may expand, pushing the window off its clamps and causing it to fall off track. This can happen in both cold Canadian temperatures and when there is humidity present that can cause moisture to be present. Although there is no replacement clip offered by Volkswagen, you should take your vehicle to a service technician to see if a temporary fix can be applied to keep the window on track.
Fuel System Problems with Certain VW Tiguan Models
A recall has been issued for the Volkswagen Tiguan models manufactured between July 2007 and June 2014. This issue involves the fuel system and the use of winterized fuels that may cause bubbles to form. When the bubbles form, your sign that there may be a problem is the stalling out of your Tiguan vehicle. This is a serious problem that should be addressed immediately if you have had experiences with your Volkswagen Tiguan stalling out while driving.
